The Lake City Panthers overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit to win its Region 6-3A opener over Loris 19-16 Friday.
The Panthers took a 7-0 leading in the first quarter on a Nick Jones touchdown reception, but the Lions took advantage of two Lake City turnovers, scoring 14 points and taking a 14-7 lead into halftime.
Another Lake City miscue on its opening possession of the third period led to a safety for Loris, putting the Panthers in a 16-7 hole.
Midway through the third period, quarterback Chris Burnett connected with receiver Stefan Rose for a 69-yard scoring pass to cut the Loris lead to 16-13.
Lake City’s special teams forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, and Burnett scored on a two-yard run to put the Panthers ahead 19-16 with 2:23 remaining in the third.
Burnett completed 10 of 22 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another score. Rose hauled in three receptions for 91 yards and a score, while Jones caught four passes for 49 yards and a touchdown.
The Panthers (2-4, 1-0) will host Georgetown Friday.
