The Lake City Panthers relied on five made three-pointers Thursday to bounce back from Tuesday’s loss to Marion and take a 56-52 win over Crestwood in the second day of action at the Pepsi Carolina Classic.
Raekwon Hailey and Nicholas Jones both connected on three-point shots in the first quarter to help give the Panthers a 13-12 lead. Lake City led 24-22 at the half.
Lake City extended its lead to seven points early in the third period on a baseline jumper by Stephfon Rose. Crestwood managed to cut into the Lake City lead before the end of the third and got within two points before TyQavious Smith scored at the buzzer to extend Lake City’s lead back to four points.
The Panthers built a 45-35 lead in just over a minute to start the fourth period by converting Crestwood turnovers into points.
Over the final two minutes of the game, though, the Panthers saw their comfortable lead and led 52-50 with 1:39 remaining. Hailey then gave the Panthers a four-point lead and put the game out of reach after making a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left.
Rose led the Panthers with 12 points and Hailey added 10.
Lake City will play Cheraw Friday at 2:15 p.m. in the Consolation Bracket.
